What does an employment background check actually verify?

Employment verification confirms the companies a candidate worked for, job titles held, start and end dates, reason for leaving (where available), and whether they are eligible for rehire. We verify directly with the employer — not just against a candidate’s CV. When a previous employer is unresponsive or no longer exists, we use alternative methods including reference databases and HR contact tracing.


How long does employment verification take?

Employment verification completes on average within 10 working days of the candidate submitting their information. In some markets, this can extend to up to 20 working days. Turnaround depends on employer responsiveness — Veremark makes up to 5 contact attempts on your behalf. You track status in real time throughout.


Which countries do you cover for employment history checks?

180+ countries. Established processes in Singapore, Australia, Philippines, Malaysia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, India, UK, US, Thailand, and across EMEA and LATAM. If a candidate worked for a company in another country, we can verify it. Specific market turnaround times on request.


What if a previous employer is overseas, rebranded, or no longer exists?

This is common, especially with APAC candidates who have worked across multiple markets. Our team uses alternative verification methods — HR contact databases, registrar searches, and documented due-diligence records — to produce a verified result or a clearly documented inconclusive finding. You’ll always get a result, not a blank.


Who contacts the candidate and their previous employers?

Veremark handles both. The candidate receives a secure link to consent and submit their employment history. Our team then contacts previous employers directly. Average candidate completion time: 6 minutes. You’re notified when each step is complete.


What’s the difference between employment verification and a reference check?

Employment verification confirms the facts: companies, job titles, dates, rehire eligibility. A reference check goes further — it collects qualitative feedback from a manager or colleague about performance, working style, and fit. Both can be run together as a single check package. For roles with high trust requirements, running both is standard practice.
